Concerning the "awesome" wide angle, the ends of the picture are HIGHLY distorted and looks terrible, so what's the point of it?

If you're looking for a compact or lightweight model, this isn't it; the Cyber Shot F828 weighs about 2 pounds with battery and media loaded, making it the heaviest non-dSLR camera we've seen.

Let’s take a closer look and find out…The HX9V is built around a 1/2.3in Sony Exmor R CMOS sensor that offers an effective resolution of 16.2-megapixels.
Cybershot DSC-HX9v by TrustedReviews (Nov, 2011)
Like all of Sony's 2012 18-megapixel Cyber-shots, most pictures viewed at full size aren't impressive.

My wife and I were getting tired of juggling a full frame DSLR and accopanying lenses and decided a high-end point and shoot was in order.

To recap: a full-frame sensor is the equivalent size of a frame of 35mm film.

Memory Card, Digpro Compact Camera Deluxe Carrying Case, and more or a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 12.1 MP Rugged/Waterproof Digital Camera with 4.6x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Silver) since it's more weather-resistant and designed to withstand this dusty desert environment I live in.

The Sony Cyber-shot produces incredibly sharp pictures and the "wide angle" has come in handy.

The Manual mode lets you set a shutter speed of up to 30 seconds for effective night-time shooting, although I missed the Aperture and Shutter Priority modes that several rivals offer, and only having two possible apertures in Manual mode does somewhat limit what you can achieve.
Cybershot DSC-HX9v by Photography Blog (Jun, 2011)
It bests the 8-megapixel EVF-camera competition by offering both excellent wide-angle capabilities with a 28mm-to-200mm focal length range (35mm-camera equivalent) and a f/2.0-to-f/2.8 maximum aperture that promises good low-light performance.

What I like about camera: good looks,16x zoom,24 mm wide angle lens, good pictures, full hd video-looks v.good, you can zoom while recording, very good flash, very good screen, menu easy to navigate, cheap battery+charger combo that can be bought for just $10,3D effect for taking picture(will add depth to picture),panorama mode.
Cybershot DSC-HX9v by Margaret-Bakalarz (Dec, 2011)
It's not perfect, but for its price and size, it's an excellent choice if you're after a very pocket-friendly snapshooter with some extra zoom.

If you're looking for a simple, modestly priced pocket camera that shoots quickly and produces good pictures, the W90 makes a nice choice.

Performance Real world tests of Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v vs Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX10V

battery life

Battery life is great and I love the USB charger because you can get a car charger that you plug the charger into and charge your camera in the a car, or airplane.
Cybershot DSC-HX9v by Chris-A.-Warton (Jul, 2011)
The battery life is a CIPA-rated 340 shots, which is very good, but if you're shooting a lot of video, have the display brightness cranked up, or are using a lot of the multishot modes or burst shooting, this will cut into your battery life.
Cyber-shot DSC-HX10V by c|net (Sep, 2005)

max continuous shooting

The camera did it's burst thing, and the results are as sharp as a tripod-mounted shot.
Cybershot DSC-HX9v by C.-Hugo
Combined with the lack of a regular slow-but-steady burst that can shoot a larger number of frames, the HX1 becomes far less useful for continuous shooting than it really should be.

Autofocus on video both when zooming in or out, or when the subject was moving around was better than the SD4500.

I will say that the HX5 has been the most durable camera that I've owned in a long time and the HX10 appears to have great build quality as well.

For me, the Sony HX9V is a great all-in-one travel zoom camera that I can comfortably take anywhere and get good photos and great video.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is a new travel-zoom compact camera that seemingly offers all of the latest must-have features.

The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX9V's 16x zoom lens offers a very versatile focal range, as illustrated by these examples.

video

I've owned the HX9V for about 10 months and it has provided the best video quality overall.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 80% by by Wat (Feb, 2012)
The dedicated Movie button on the rear of the DSC-HX9V allows you to start recording a movie with a single push of a button, and then stop recording by pressing the same button - a lot more intuitive than having to select the movie mode then press the shutter button, as on most compacts.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 100% by by Photography Blog (Jun, 2011)
Present and correct is the increasingly ubiquitous ability to shoot High Definition video clips, but unlike its main competitors the HX9V does so at full 1080p HD rather than 1080i or 720p, and also with stereo sound rather than mono.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 100% by by Photography Blog (Jun, 2011)

image quality

The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX9V's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds in the Manual mode, which is great news if you're seriously interested in night photography.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 100% by by Photography Blog (Jun, 2011)
Try a hand supported shot in the dead of night with your DSLR and 300mm lens, or even that P. &S you have now and you'll see what I mean.1080p @60fps absolutely shines on the HX9v, but you already knew that.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 80% by by Ozzallos (Dec, 2011)
The main thing that knocks down the image quality on the HX9V is the heavy noise reduction that smears detail.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 80% by by Charles-Hepburn-II--Yalskey (Aug, 2011)

focus

In use, the HX9V offers speedy autofocus performance with the camera getting a near instantaneous focus lock in good light and only slowing down fractionally when light levels dip.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Nov, 2011)
In really dark conditions the HX9V will deploy an orange AF Assist beam to help it find focus.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Nov, 2011)
Also located on the front of the HX9V is the centrally located lens and a porthole on the left for the self-timer/AF illuminator.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 100% by by Photography Blog (Jun, 2011)

weight

On HX9V, at least you don't have to defish afterward, and don't have to put up with the weight (DSLR plus a fish eye lens could easily weigh more than 5 times this thing).
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 100% by by W.-Xiao--Way-Easy (May, 2011)
The pictures were not as sharp as the FZ100's but the hx9v is not as heavy/big as the fz100 either.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9v | Rated 80% by by S.-Krishna--emperor_black
The biggest difference between the two models is the lens: the HX9V has a 16x, f3.3-5.9, 24-384mm lens, while the HX30V gets a 20x, f3.2-5.8, 25-500mm lens - all without a significant increase in size and weight.
