Image quality is impressive, with nice color accuracy and accurate exposures that tend to preserve shadow detail at the expense of highlight detail when forced to compromise.

With the fastest lens of any compact to date, the LX7 also offers an improved 10 megapixel sensor, full 1080p HD movies and an even better control system than the previous LX5 model.

sensor size

Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7
What is more important in the sensor is its size, which is critical to fast shutter speeds and low light photography.
Cybershot DSC-RX100 by Ted-Shafer (Jul, 2012)
Were it not for the arrival of the Sony RX100, the LX7 would have been our defacto choice as a pocketable and user-friendly compact for keen photographers that delivers excellent image quality considering the small size of its sensor, but Sony's offering produces even better images from an even smaller camera, admittedly at an even higher price.

wide angle lens

Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7
The RX100 perfectly fits my above criteria and is really incredible - overall a great camera that somehow manages to cram a fast, wide-angle lens and a huge sensor into a tiny body.
Cybershot DSC-RX100 by Ted-Shafer (Jul, 2012)
Wide angle shots fare better, with most images showing good edge-to-edge sharpness.

They don't have the aperture ability of build quality of the RX100.-No GPS or WiFi.

To make the most of the fast lens, Panasonic has added an aperture ring around the lens barrel, alongside a 3-stop neutral density filter that has its own external control point.

Despite its large image sensor and correspondingly physically big zoom lens that dominates the front of the camera, the Sony RX100 is still quite small and slender, measuring just over 3.5cms in depth, 5.8cms in height and 10cms in width, and weighing 240g with the battery and memory card fitted.
Cybershot DSC-RX100 by Photography Blog (Jul, 2012)

If you're looking for a compact or lightweight model, this isn't it; the Cyber Shot F828 weighs about 2 pounds with battery and media loaded, making it the heaviest non-dSLR camera we've seen.
Cybershot DSC-RX100 by c|net (Sep, 2002)
But it is very well balanced, and unless you really do want to keep it in your pocket - offers an excellent compromise between size/weight and handling.

Performance Real world tests of Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 vs Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7

battery life

330 photos
330 photos
The battery life is a CIPA-rated 340 shots, which is very good, but if you're shooting a lot of video, have the display brightness cranked up, or are using a lot of the multishot modes or burst shooting, this will cut into your battery life.
Cybershot DSC-RX100 by c|net (Sep, 2002)
While battery life has dropped considerably since the LX5, it's still tied for the top spot in the premium compact group.
Lumix DMC-LX7 by DPReview (Sep, 2012)

max continuous shooting

Combined with the lack of a regular slow-but-steady burst that can shoot a larger number of frames, the HX1 becomes far less useful for continuous shooting than it really should be.
Cybershot DSC-RX100 by c|net (Sep, 2002)
Sony's other NEX models have very impressive burst modes.

No point in my reiterating what is on dozens of other blogs/reviews on the overall quality of the camera, suffice it to say that it is fast and responsive and takes great pictures of fast-moving kids even in low light conditions.
Cybershot DSC-RX100 by Ted-Shafer (Jul, 2012)
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7's maximum shutter speed is 60 seconds in the Manual shooting mode and the Starry Sky Mode scene mode, which is great news if you're seriously interested in night photography.

The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 is the company's first pocket-sized advanced compact, and comes with a rich feature set that includes a larger than average 20.3MP sensor; a high quality 3.6x Zeiss optical zoom with a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture; full manual control and the ability to shoot Raw images; a range of built-in digital filter effects and, last but not least, the ability to record 1080p Full HD movies.

The LX7 also benefits from the same Multi-Aspect Sensor design of the LX5, to ensure as much as possible of the sensor’s total surface area is used - thereby keeping effective resolution as high as possible regardless of what aspect you choose to shoot in.

In addition, it's as happy shooting sweep panoramas and automated HDR images as it is capturing Raw images with plenty of exposure control, which means you arrive home with a more varied selection of images and videos than you might with one of its competitors.

The first set of flash shots taken with our first camera were quite under-exposed, however these from the second camera demonstrate good metering and good flash power output, they're pretty much as good as you could expect from a built-in flash.

As you'd expect with a screen of that size on such a small camera, the RX100 has no optical viewfinder to fall back on in brighter lighting conditions, although in practice Sony's WhiteMagic technology results in a a very high contrast screen that can be comfortably used outdoors even in harsh sunlight.

I am not saying this camera replaces my main camera but the RX100 does a decent job when I don't have it around, macros, night photography, good DOF, fast lens and optics, good zoom, etc, etc..

Even I constrained ISO to <800, I still can take good pictures at night w/o turn on flash, thanks to the large lens and image stabilization.

For the pro who is constantly changing ISO/Aperture/Shutter/ev/WB....the RX100 is worth the money.

That said, the RX100's sensor is twice the size of the LX7 with twice the resolution (20MP versus 10MP).
Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 | Rated 80% by by Matt-Eye--Matthew (Aug, 2012)
The RX100 has two ISO settings below its native 'base' ISO of 125 and, as you would expect, these both result in lower highlight dynamic range (since they are effectively the same as ISO 125 but with greater exposure).

the RX100 only has 1 lens, but WOW - It is an amazing lens, made by a well respected brand in lenses.

This camera is way better than buying any DSLR (around $700 range( and settling with cheap kit lens as RX100 has much faster and better lens than any kit lens that come with DSLRs)).
Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 | Rated 100% by by kits-from-VA--gadgetGeek (Jul, 2012)
I especially recommend this cam for non-enthusiasts who just want P&S and not fiddle with the settings cause RX100 has such reliable full Auto mode coupled with large sensor and aperture virtually guaranteeing clean images in any light without adjusting setting or using flash all the time.

If you do not mind slightly impressionistic photos but great performance and excellent image stabilization in very low light, the HX30V is the best you can do with a small image sensor for even less than the LX7.

I found I could take pretty good low light shots with just these settings on aperture priority, getting depth of field and low light control within the understandable limitations of a camera having the RX100's focal length.

The dedicated Movie button on the rear of the DSC-RX100 allows you to start recording a movie with a single push of a button, and then stop recording by pressing the same button - a lot more intuitive than having to select the movie mode then press the shutter button, as on most compacts.

I like it that the NEX and RX100 can display MP4, AVCHD, or photos, but not everything in playback mode.
Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 | Rated 80% by by Matt-Eye--Matthew (Aug, 2012)
Present and correct is the increasingly ubiquitous ability to shoot High Definition video clips, but unlike its main competitors the RX100 does so at full 1080p HD rather than 1080i or 720p, and also with stereo sound rather than mono.

Other compact camera makers need to take a long, hard look in the mirror Here's the real reason why you'll want to pick up an RX100: the photos it takes are stunning to the point where all other compact camera makers will need to take a long, hard look in the mirror.
