Rated 80% by by Patti-Cake--basschick (Mar, 2013)My NEX 5R pics look good overall, with good dynamic range, and the movies look great.
Rated 100% by by Kreader (Aug, 2012)It is very fast, has great depth of color and it exceptional at low light photos, like night sky with little moonlight.
Conclusion Which is better for you?
Features Key features of the Sony NEX-5R compared to the Sony NEX-5N
MP16
APS-C
Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)While it looks almost identical to its predecessor, the new 180° tilting LCD screen, faster hybrid auto-focusing, wi-fi connectivity, downloadable apps and a more refined interface make the NEX-5R a great mid-range mirrorless camera.

APS-C
Rated 80% by by Michael-McKee--mystic-cowboy (Apr, 2012)The NEX's hand held night function actually works very well, allowing me to take a number of indoor photos in low light that came out great.

NEX-5R by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 16 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 5Mb.
NEX-5N by amxmanThe combination of 23.6 x 15.8mm with a 16 million pixel count beats even the Nex 7N on low light performance (maybe due to higher pixel count on the Nex 7N for same sensor size ) and even some DSLRs.
sensor size
NEX-5R by Patti-Cake--basschick (Mar, 2013)But the main reason I thought an APS-C sensor camera would be better than the micro four thirds cameras I had been using didn't come to pass - my Panasonic G3 shot cleaner low light pics than the 5R.
NEX-5N by DPReview (Sep, 2011)The 16.1MP sensor in the 5N is capable of capturing images that rival some of the best APS-C format DSLRs on the market, and up to ISO 6400 image quality is impressive.

NEX-5R by DPReview (Aug, 2012)With its magnesium alloy shell, reassuring weight and solid rubber grip the camera gives a good impression of quality.
NEX-5N by zach (Jul, 2012)the camera is light-weight, easy to use, and produces AMAZING quality photos and video.

NEX-5R by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)Set at four points around this scroll wheel/pad are a means of adjusting the display, ISO speed, exposure compensation (+/- 2EV selectable), and drive mode (single shot, continuous, continuous with speed priority, so focus/exposure fixed from the first shot), or self timer option (2 or 10 seconds).
NEX-5N by Slept-Thru-It (Nov, 2011)Many other reviews cover the overall high points of the camera, so I'll focus on a few review elements I think need reinforcement.
Performance Real world tests of Sony NEX-5R vs Sony NEX-5N
DxOMark image quality
NEX-5R by Z.-Wu--Z.-Wu (Oct, 2012)Handheld twilight, Panorama photo, Auto HDR is best in its class, easy to use and boost creativity.
NEX-5N by S.-James (Oct, 2011)This is when your subject is crisp and that beautiful rose bush behind them is blurry with just some great color coming through and wow the picture just jumps at you.
DxOMark low light performance
continuous shooting
NEX-5N by c|net (Sep, 2011)It can burst at about 3.3fps, which is sufficient for occasionally shooting kids and pets, as long as they're not moving too fast.

sensor
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | Rated 100% by by Mike-Hendren (Oct, 2012)The 16 Megapixel sensor produces excellent images, handles noise well at the higher ISO's, and gives us phase-detection autofocus which has been faster and more reliable than any other NEX I've owned (5N, F3, and 7).
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | Rated 60% by by Richard-Gray (Dec, 2012)Last negative is that Adobe Raw cannot yet process the RAW format pictures, even though it apparently works for the NEX-5N previous model.
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | Rated 80% by by Patti-Cake--basschick (Mar, 2013)One last thing that I found inconvenient is that I was able to work with the raw pics from the 5N in my existing raw programs, but not the 5R - its raw files wouldn't open in the program I use with my Canon and Panasonic cameras and with the 5N, so one must choose to buy a new raw program or use the supplied Sony software.
lens
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)With the supplied 18-55mmm kit lens attached the NEX-5R also looks and feels top heavy, and that's without fitting an existing Alpha DSLR lens proper, compatibility offered with pre-existing optics via the LA-EA2 accessory adapter which allows phase-detection AF with almost all of the A-mount lenses.
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | Rated 80% by by S.-SzeAfter enjoying the NEX 3 with the 18-55 kit lens for 2 years I finally found a good reason to upgrade myself to the NEX 5R accompanying the newer 16-50mm powerzoom lens (SEL1650pz) which i have a separate review on the lens in amazon.com (and a separate review on NEX 3 in 2011).
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)Image stabilisation via the lens is a very useful feature that works well when hand-holding the NEX-5R in low-light conditions or when using the telephoto end of the zoom range.
focus
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | Rated 80% by by Patti-Cake--basschick (Mar, 2013)But the thing I really don't like about my 5R is that it's always focusing, so if you focus a shot, it will refocus it.
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 79% by by DPReview (Sep, 2011)Along with the release of the NEX-5N, Sony has also introduced a new accessory port-mounted electronic viewfinder, and an Alpha mount lens adapter that uses Sony's SLT technology to offer fast phase-detection auto focus with compatible lenses.
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2012)The NEX-5n further benefits from Sony’s current generation of BIONZ image processor, enabling it to crunch its way through data at a fair old pace with up to 10fps available in Speed Priority Continuous mode (whereby the AF and metering functions are only active for the first frame of the sequence) or 3fps with the AF constantly active in regular Continuous mode.
type
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | by DPReview (Aug, 2012)The biggest technology advance on the NEX-5R is the addition of a modified sensor with pixels devoted to performing phase-detection to provide a hybrid autofocus system.
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)The new hybrid auto-focusing is slightly faster and more accurate than on the older 5N model, but note that it only currently works with a few Sony lenses.
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | by DPReview (Aug, 2012)The NEX-5R is the first Sony to feature a Hybrid AF system.
viewfinder
Sony NEX-5R Hands-on P | Rated 40% by by rj45 (Nov, 2012)body feels way too plasticy, though the metallic kit lens feels solid; while the grip is improved over the 5/5N, it still feels a bit awkward to me, handle too smooth; a rubberized grip like Nikon will be much better.2) you can't attach a flash and a view finder at the same time, though not a big problem for me, may be for some folks, and the view finder is like 350 usd.
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 80% by by Geo.-G. (Nov, 2011)The NEX 5N is a terrific camera that needs to be just a little bigger with a view finder and a menu system that is a lot better and more easily readable regarding font size.
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 100% by by LGO--LG10 (Sep, 2011)Moreover, unlike cameras with built-in EVF (such as the X100, GH2 or the Sony NER-7), the optional external EVF in a Sony NEX-5N gives the owner an option to shoot with the EVF oriented 90-degrees upward.
