Released June, 2011
Rated 100% by by M.-Kearl (Aug, 2011)The weight and main bulk of the camera is the 18-55mm lens that comes with it, and not the camera body.
Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Oct, 2011)While it looks almost identical to its predeccesor, faster focusing, less shutter lag, better video and stills, and an intuitive touchscreen interface are just some of the many improvements that have taken place under the hood, making this the best NEX camera and one of the best CSC's that we've reviewed.
Conclusion Which is better for you?
Features Key features of the Sony NEX C3 compared to the NEX-5N
MP16
APS-C
Rated 100% by by dnjake (Oct, 2011)All in all this camera is easy to carry around and, for the kind of images I am interested in, it significantly outperforms equipment I paid four times the money for.
16 MP
APS-C
Rated 79% by by DPReview (Sep, 2011)This is a much easier way of choosing an object to track than using the control dial, but we would have liked to see Sony do more with the 5N's touch screen, at the very least perhaps an equivalent to the 'touch shutter' functions we've seen in recent Olympus and Panasonic Micro Four Thirds cameras.
megapixels
| 0 MP | 16 MP | 20 MP |
NEX C3 by Yano (Sep, 2012)This camera ironically features one of the best 16MP APS sensors ever made, better than the ones put in Sony's other 16MP APS cameras and Nikon's 16MP cameras (All Nikon DSLR sensors are made by Sony).
NEX-5N by amxmanThe combination of 23.6 x 15.8mm with a 16 million pixel count beats even the Nex 7N on low light performance (maybe due to higher pixel count on the Nex 7N for same sensor size ) and even some DSLRs.
sensor size
NEX-5N by DPReview (Sep, 2011)The 16.1MP sensor in the 5N is capable of capturing images that rival some of the best APS-C format DSLRs on the market, and up to ISO 6400 image quality is impressive.
body size
110 x 60 x 33 mm
111 x 59 x 38 mm
NEX C3 by Karen-D (Apr, 2012)this little camera is great, about half the size of the d40 much easier to manage.
NEX-5N by zach (Jul, 2012)the camera is light-weight, easy to use, and produces AMAZING quality photos and video.
focus points
| 0 | 25 | 30 |
NEX C3 by M.-Li (Apr, 2012)It's also turned me into an amateur photographer, as I read up on f stops and manual focusing in order to fully exploit the capabilities of this camera.
NEX-5N by Slept-Thru-It (Nov, 2011)Many other reviews cover the overall high points of the camera, so I'll focus on a few review elements I think need reinforcement.
Performance Real world tests of Sony NEX C3 vs NEX-5N
DxOMark image quality
NEX C3 by Sarge (Dec, 2011)Has a full size processor similar to a DSLR in a 4/5 camera so picture quality is excellent.
NEX-5N by Kreader (Aug, 2012)It is very fast, has great depth of color and it exceptional at low light photos, like night sky with little moonlight.
DxOMark low light performance
NEX C3 by SunnySideUp (Sep, 2011)The pictures are amazing, even in low light colors are great, pictures are super sharp and the continues shooting allows us to capture every smile and new movement with clear sharp images.
NEX-5N by Michael-McKee--mystic-cowboy (Apr, 2012)The NEX's hand held night function actually works very well, allowing me to take a number of indoor photos in low light that came out great.
shutter lag
| 0 ms | 235 ms | 300 ms |
NEX C3 by appstatephotographer (Sep, 2012)There really isn't much that I don't like about this camera, other than the fact that I wish it had a remote shutter release.
NEX-5N by E.-Crandall (Nov, 2011)Shutter lag is excellent - this is one of my main issues with digital cameras, so I'm happy, The user interface works well enough although like every other digital camera I've seen it has its own weirdness.
continuous shooting
NEX C3 by Jason (Dec, 2012)The continuous shooting feature works great, and the stock 18-55 lens takes amazing pictures.
NEX-5N by c|net (Sep, 2011)It can burst at about 3.3fps, which is sufficient for occasionally shooting kids and pets, as long as they're not moving too fast.
battery life
400 photos
460 photos
NEX C3 by Derrick (Aug, 2011)On the first full charge I took almost 400 jpeg+raw pictures, a couple panoramas and a video, along with plenty of reviewing of pictures on the LCD and still had 18% battery life left.

screen
Sony NEX C3 | Rated 100% by by Jaguar (Nov, 2012)5N is slightly more expensive and it has 3 features attractive to me: the touch screen focus, better shutter lag, and the 1080P video recording.
Sony NEX C3 | Rated 100% by by hahn (Feb, 2012)Get 5N if you want it with a touch screen but it really doesn't matter since the camera's buttons are so easy to use and you'll never get lost in operating it.
touch
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 100% by by Daniel--o-rochon (Nov, 2011)One of the features that i love about the NEX 5n is the touchscreen, this gives you all the options you need in a very small case, for example, you can easily touch on the screen the point of the frame that you want your nex to focus in!
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 79% by by DPReview (Sep, 2011)The 5N's capacitive touchscreen is quick and responsive and most of the menus utilize 'momentum' scrolling that makes it easy to scroll through long lists quickly.
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 100% by by Tony-Tinoco--The-Wizard-Of-WorI found that I prefer the 5N's touchscreen which aids in focusing and changing menu items on the fly.
video
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 100% by by Chris-M (Mar, 2012)The Sony NEX-5N is the best camera I have ever used for under $1000 with amazing still shot performance - including at a high ISO - and unparalleled 1080p video quality with continuous auto-focus.
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 100% by by FiveForm--FiveFormA few negatives preventing the NEX-5N from achieving perfection are: The size being almost too small for some hands, (I've read that the 7N is slightly larger with better ergonomics, but at double the price, I'll wait), video audio clicking sounds that Sony has acknowledged are not just our imagination (I don't shoot enough "quiet video" for that to matter, but video HD qualtity on my Sony Bravia is stunning)!
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 100% by by Nurul-Choudhury--tek-on-the-hudsonAlthough I did not expect the replacement for NEX 5 to be much better than the C3 except for video and I did not really use video that much and 720p was good enough for me.
sensor
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 79% by by DPReview (Sep, 2011)The step up to an APS-C format sensor alone provides the potential for greater depth of field control and the 5N's 16.1MP CMOS sensor offers markedly superior low light performance over compact cameras with a 1/2.3" or 1/1.8" sensor, and indeed matches the best results we've seen from its APS-C DSLR competition.
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2012)The Sony NEX-5n is built around a 23.5 x 15.6mm APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor that produces an effective resolution of 16.1MP.
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2012)Indeed, the compact-sized dimensions of the NEX-5n even hold up quite well against its Micro Four Thirds and Nikon CX competitors as well – at least in terms of the actual camera body.
image quality
Sony NEX C3 | Rated 100% by by Informed-Buyer (Aug, 2011)The C3 has a small edge in several areas including resolution, low light capabilities, battery life, weight, size, color depth, and general image quality.
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 40% by by Nickthere are actually models out there with zero video recording issues. My conclusion is that the noise is likely not as pronounced in some models or some buyers may not be as concerned because they love the good quality pics it takes.I myself am leaning more towards keeping the 1st NEX-5N from Amazon since the camera seems to work well and I likely won't record videos as much. I have a few more days to make up my mind before having to ship back for refund.
Sony NEX-5N | Rated 79% by by DPReview (Sep, 2011)For more information about this mode please take a look at our 'Hand-held Twilight' example from the NEX-C3 review.
