The release date is the date the product was first available for purchase, which is often a while after the manufacturer officially announces a product.
The people have spoken! But are they worth listening to?
Sortable considers not only how highly reviewed a product is, but also how many reviews it has received to boil down a single number that tells you your odds of getting a lemon.

A netbook is a small, lightweight and inexpensive laptop. A netbook will usually have enough horsepower to surf the web, but don't expect to play the latest zombie shotter on these systems.
At Sortable, a laptop is considered a netbook if
The ultra-portable category contains small, lightweight notebook ideal for the road-warrior or the travelling executive. Due to their small size, most ultra-portables include a solid state hard drive and leave out an optical drive.
At Sortable, a laptop is considered ultra-portable if
The full size category contains larger, full size laptops. The advantage of full size laptops is that they usually include a larger keyboard and a larger screen - both are essential for power user that spend lots of time on their laptop
At Sortable, a laptop is considered ultra-portable if
As the name implies, desktop replacement laptop have most of the features and performance of a desktop computer. Suited to video editing and gaming, many Desktop replacements have a powerful processors and discrete graphics. These performance features come at the cost of portability; desktop replacements are the largest laptops.
At Sortable, a laptop is considered a desktop replacement if
Tablet PCs are a cross between a laptop and a handheld tablet (such as the iPad). Tablet PCs are usually more powerful handeld tablets, and are capable of running Windows 7. Some Tablet PCs also include a keyboard and act like a laptop with a touch screen.
At Sortable, a laptop is considered a tablet if

thin
An estimate of how long a single battery charge will last, on average
This measure is very subjective! For instance, some usage patterns such as watching high-definition video and heavily relying on 3G/4G will reduce the amount of time you have on a single charge.

touch
- Capacitive touchscreens
- detect small changes in electric current when touched with your bare hand. Note capacitive screens cannot detect a touch when the user is wearing gloves. If this poses a problem, you can use a special capacitive stylus.
- Resistive touchscreens
- consist of two thin surfaces that, when pressed together, indicate the location of a touch. Because they react to pressure rather than electric charge, resistive screens can be used while wearing gloves.

high PPI
The diagonal size of a display is the distance between two opposite corners of the screen.
Note that two screens can have the same diagonal size but have different lengths and widths if the screens have different aspect ratios.
For example a 15" screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio will actaully measure 12" x 9", whereas a 15" screen with a 16:9 aspect ration will measure 13.1" x 7.4"
There are two mechanism used by the screen to determine when and where a user is touching it :
The native screen resolution. The native resolution will display the largest, clearest, least distorted image, at the higest refresh rate.
Whether the screen supports 1080p (sometime called Full HD) in its native resolution. To support 1080p there must be more than 1,080 lines of horizontal resolution
Screen PPI, or Pixels per Inch, is a measure of how sharp an image the screen will display. More PPI means that there are more pixels packed tightly together on the screen.
The formula used to calculate PPI from a screen's resoultion and size is:
Where H is the horizontal resolution, V is the vertical resolution, and D is the diagonal size of the screen
On very high PPI screens, text may be rendered smaller and be more difficuilt to read.

The Sortable CPU score is an aggregation of multiple CPU benchmark scores that have been collected for a CPU. The scores have been normalized such that a score of 100 represents the best processor across all desktop and mobile processors.
This score combines results from the following benchmarks:
-
Dual core
-
Quad core
-
Clock Speed
Number of physical computing cores on the processor. Having additional cores allows you to run multiple processing-intensive applications at once.
More cores result in better parallelism, meaning more computations can be processed in parallel. Having more cores alone will not necessarily increase performance of a single application; application must be specifically written to take advantage of multiple cores. Many modern applications, such as video compression, can take advantage of multiple cores.

Clock speed is related to the number of operations a processor can complete in a second. For a particular processor, increasing the clock speed (known as overclocking) will increase the performance of the processor at the cost of using more electricity and generating more heat.
Care should be taken to not compare processors from different manufactures, or even different families, on clock speed alone since clock speed is only one of many factors that can influence the performance of the processor. Software performance benchmark measurements are a better way to compare performance.

SSD
- Larger and cheaper - The cost per gigabyte of storage is much less for HDDs that SSDs. Hard drives as large as 1,000 GB are not uncommon whereas a typical SSD may have closer to 256 GB capacity.
- Longer lifetime - Flash based SSDs can only perform a limited number of writes (around 1-5 million) before they fail.
- Compatible with older systems - SSDs require newer operating systems to perform optimally.
- Faster - An SSD has no moving parts to spin up or move to access data. Random data access can be up to 100x faster than HDDs.
- Quieter - Again, since there are no moving parts, no sound is generated when accessing data
- More Durable - An SSD has no moving parts to fail due to shock or vibration
-
7200 RPM
The amount of internal storage installed installed in the system.
More storage allows you to keep more photos and videos on your computer, as well as have more applications installed at once.
The type of internal storage installed in this system
There are two main types of storage, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.
Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
Traditional data storage technology that stores data on rotating magnetic platters. Advantages:
Solid State Drive (SSD)
A relatively new technology that uses no moving parts to store data. Advantages:
The maximum speed at which the magnetic platters storing information in a hard disk drive can spin. Higher RPMs typically means data can be accessed faster.
Note that this measurement does not apply to solid disk drives (SSDs) since they have no moving parts
By spinning platters faster, data can be positioned under the read/write head of the disk faster, decreasing the rotational latency and increasing the speed at which data can be read or written
Desktop computers usually have 7200 RPM disk drives, while laptops, due to their small form factor, usually ship with slightly slower 5400 RPM drives.
-
ram
-
DDR2
-
DDR3
Total amount of internal memory (known as RAM) installed on the system.
More memory allows you to run more applications at once and can speed up your computer. Accessing RAM is much faster than accessing other types of storage, so having lots of RAM can speed up your applications by allowing the Operating System to keep more data in RAM, ready to access when needed.
