Toshiba's Portege Z835 is the lightest 13-inch notebook on the market and avoids some of its competitors' pitfalls by providing an accurate touchpad, long battery life, a backlit keyboard, and plenty of full-size ports.

Granted, I wasn't doing anything too intense but the battery life has been pretty good so far.

The panel quality and the lower resolution in comparison to the Air and the Asus UX31 are disappointing, though to be expected for a laptop with a starting price of $900.

All was well until one day I took it out of the bag, opened it and found that the screen had a huge section of dead pixels on the right side about a 1/3 of the way down (about 1x2inches).

But I can absolutely recommend th Z836-P370, spend the $100 more for the i5 processor, its worth it.

The I5 processor is very fast.

On top of that, the Z835 also had all of the features I wanted including the i5 quad core processor, 6 gigabytes of ram, Bluetooth and HDMI out.
unknown by J-E-T (Feb, 2012)
One thing to keep in mind when you are reading reviews at Laptopmag, etc, is that they tested the model with an i3, not the i5 being sold here.

The specs for these two machines in terms of processing power, display, webcam, ports, bluetooth, WiFi, memory are almost identical (though the HP has only 4 GB ram versus 6 on the Toshiba).

The 6Gb of RAM means everything run fast in memory.

Battery Life seems to be about 6 hours not 8.25 (about 3-4 hours with the external Blu Ray drive attached).

I've owned and lived with (for varying periods): an Acer S3 (shoddy build quality); HP Folio (great battery life, heavy, fair display); Samsung Series 9 (large, heavy, short battery life, great quality, superb non-gloss display, PROPRIETARY charger plug), Samsung Series 5 (great machine, short battery life, superb non-gloss display, normal charger plug), and this Toshiba Portege Z835-P370.

The island-style keys are well spaced and for the most part large, with the exception of a small Esc key.

As I’ve said, in all of these reviews, Apple still makes the best touchpad in the industry; the experience of navigating and the multitouch gestures are a clear cut above those offered on the Windows laptops.
Rated 78% by 45 users at amazon.com
In a real world use of this laptop, it will last 6.5 easy, and ~7.5 if you have a good power plan (ie dim the screen, turn off display after X.).

As far as the "heavy lifting" goes, you can do all the heavy lifting you want with the I5 processor as long as it's within the contraints of the capacity of the hard drive.

The backlit keyboard is really nice in low light conditions.

Screen

My Z835, inlcuding its LED/LCD display is perfect, no issues.

* glossy screen... yeah, I know more brightness comes through with a glossy screen, but I live in Arizona where it's sunny 355 days a year... I want a MATTE screen... the good news is that you can buy a matte screen protector for computers on amazon.

All-in-all, the Toshiba Portege Z835-P370 is the best balance of any - a non-gloss screen would make it nearly perfect.

Size

Considering the thinness and the weight, it feels pretty sturdy.
Unknown | Rated 80% by by K.-Park (Aug, 2012)
The truly amazing thing about this computer is the weight - at 2.47 pounds it is the lightest ultra-book out there right now.
Unknown | Rated 100% by by Techie1234 (Feb, 2012)
I wanted to replace my heavy 51/2 year old Dell clunker and decided on this one mostly because of its physical dimensions- ultralight and super thin.

Battery

The only issue I have with this (aside from what others have said about the thin/flimsy screen) is that the battery life seems to not be able to hold well.
Unknown | Rated 80% by by Curtis-Chan--clumpymold (Nov, 2012)
Is this a normal feature of this Toshiba, or is there something wrong with the battery that it does not hold its charge for too long.
Unknown | Rated 80% by by L.-Da-Vinci--Renaissance-Man (Jul, 2012)
. I worried that for the $900 price Toshiba may have skimped on the battery, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Unknown | Rated 78% by by The Verge (Nov, 2011)

Storage

Of course, the 128GB Toshiba SATA II SSD (the model number is THNSNB128GCJ for those wondering) does give the Z835 an added push, but the drive isn’t as fast as others in real-world testing.
Unknown | Rated 78% by by The Verge (Nov, 2011)
It is very fast when booting from cold (20 seconds) and the hard drive makes all the functions very fast.

I don't think I can ever go back to a standard HDD.

Weight

Toshiba's aim here was to produce the lightest ultraportable laptop while maintaining some functionality and they've done a very nice job.
