That said, the VAIO's display didn't appear as bright as other large mainstream notebooks we've tested, specifically the HP Envy 17 and Dell Studio 17.

While its pixel density is not quite high enough to natively display 1080p video content, movies looked great on the laptop's screen.

The 16.4-inch display has a 1,920x1,080-pixel native resolution, which is what we'd expect in a high-end laptop of this size.

Our configuration of the VAIO F featured a 1.60-GHz Intel Core i7-720QM processor (which overclocks to 2.8-GHz), 8GB of RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), and a 500GB hard drive running at a fast 7,200 rpm.

I'd been deciding on a new laptop to replace my very very old Dell Latitude that was running a Pentium M 1.8 Ghz processor and XP Pro.

The quad-core Core i7 platform really shines when it comes to heavy duty multimedia tasks.

While the various preset configurations keep changing and disappearing, Sony currently has the customizable version of this system for sale on its website, and it's worth noting that even the $1,049 base model includes a quad-core Intel Core i7 CPU.

But everything has been fast and smooth so far and I don't feel I need to add another 4GB RAM anytime soon.

Further I upgraded to 8 Gig of Ram, and since it's got BlueRay as standard it's a great value / Price.

The VAIO F’s strong showing isn’t surprising: the benefit of Core i7 processors is that their quad-core architecture offers blazing performance.

In benchmark testing, the 2.2GHz Intel Core i7 2670QM performed excellently, beating out Dell's XPS 15z and Toshiba's P775 (both with Core i7 CPUs) in our multitasking test.

The upgrade to i7 is worth it in my opinion, you can feel how fast this laptop is with and it never misses a beat.

The 640 gig HDD is also nice, but even bigger would be better if you are using the computer for Hi-Def video editing.

They said the original laptop does not come with the crappy Toshiba HDD as well as it only use samsung memory card in this model.

Battery

I paid for an extra Sony AC adapter and battery when I ordered it, and the symptom was that the battery wouldn't charge with any combination of adapters or batteries.

Click to enlargeThe VAIO F was able to charge its battery to 80 percent in a relatively slow 2 hours and 37 minutes, and it took 3:59 to top off completely.

As you can imagine for a laptop this size and power, battery life is not the VAIO F's strong suit.

Harddrive

this laptop has great internal hardware which makes me feel im using my home disk top, love the 3D and the screen is just wow, the only downside is the battery, dies fast, i use this with power adapter so no problems for me, plays most games on mid quality, and its fast, going to upgrade its RAM and HDD to SSD in the future, right now its awesome, it has a glossy finish so need to have it cleaned from time to time if you want to maintain the shining look on it.

Storage

I do have to say it is pretty big, but that is something I can live with when I am watching a Blu-ray and it is super crisp.

Another improvement would be to splurge an extra $100 for the full HD display, which provides 1080p resolution.

The screen is bright and very sharp and big enough for my needs I was hoping for a larger hard drive since I have seen cheaper computers with a full 1-TB drive.
