Not as quick as the Solid State drive version I'm sure, and I foresee myself purchasing a Solid State hard drive at some point in the future for this beast, but overall, the performance has been more than acceptable in terms of both data and graphic processing power.

Movies play with the fluid flow of a cinema and I connected the laptop to my projector and enjoyed "Armageddon" in 1080p, a most enjoyable and fun experience.

There are so many positive aspects to this computer and its design, from the cooling system (quite possibly one of the best designs I have ever seen for a laptop) to the rich hardware (16 GB RAM and a solid state drive plus the i7 (which does boost to 3.0 GHz)) all cooperate fantastically together.
G74 Series G74SX by John-Malachowski--Imafoolru12 (Apr, 2012)
Amount of RAM, processor speed, dedicated VRAM and screen size/resolution are truly top notch.

Hence I was looking for a portable computer with at least 16Gb of RAM and a quad-core processor.

With the 12GB of RAM and the Quad core processor, I don't think this laptop is going to run out of steam anytime soon.

I was unable to locate a reliable source for a fourth, matching Samsung DIMM so I bought four 4GB DIMMs DDR-1333 DIMMs that Crucial recommends for this system.

The Asus G74SX 3DE comes natively with 12 GBs of RAM and can be upgraded to 16 GBs of RAM for the mere price of $23.

Performance Real world tests of ASUS G74 Series G74SX

3DMark06 CPU

While the appearances of the Notebook was quite important to me, it did not take precedence over performance; this laptop performs admirably in all applications varying from Games to benchmarks to everything else.

~. If you are a gamer, which I am only the casual type (but am considering buying modern warfare 3 seen as I don't doubt this rigs ability to run it), I can tell you that the 3DMark scores (and others) posted by reviews are accurate and my framerate in CS 1.6 at 1920x1080 with light levels of AA and AF will not budge from 100 fps.

cinebench r10 32Bit

It's also an amazingly quiet machine even when running CPU/GPU intensive apps.Performance-wise, it's very solid.
G74 Series G74SX by R.-Garrett (Nov, 2011)
There is some kind of Intel CPU monitor which could allow it to set the speed to highest, but I don't see any option to do so.

Display is crisp, bright and works well with games and video.

Even on Entertainment Mode, the middle performance level, the laptop remains actually cool to the touch.

So the reminders to register blurbs were at a relative minimum.-Came with Windows 7 SP1 already installed, so only about 31 patches to download from MS. -Monitor is really bright/sharp/crisp and the backlit keyboard was functional without being too much of a distraction.-Fast and easy switching between applications, even with windows experience score of 5.9, due to the hard drive.

Gaming

This laptop has almost everything you are looking for... super great performance for gaming, and you can also turn on the 3D feature for almost every game, including World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2, and even Battlefield!

I was able to maintain 40+ FPS on some of my favorite titles like Far Cry 2, Crysis, Crysis 2, Witcher 2, and this was on the highest possible graphic configurations with Vsync disabled.

If you are looking for a sick gaming laptop that will handle basically anything you through at it, for half the price of most other considerable gaming brands, this is the ticket.

Screen

===. I'm very happy with this purchase, and I'm glad I opted for the 3D model with the bright, matte screen.

I haven't used the 3D glasses much yet, but even so I recommend this model over the other G74SX models that lack the 3D display since the matte screen and very high brightness capabilities of the 3D panel make it possible to work in what would otherwise have been poor lighting conditions for the dimmer, glossy-screened 2D models.

The big bright 17.3 inch screen is nice when doing work plus I have had no issues connecting to any network at the college.

The keyboard is backlit, which is very nice for typing at night, but it seems to be less responsive than a good keyboard should be.

I had a Toshiba Qosmio 18" monster and it's got the FULL keyboard, I loved that much-much more than this.

Touchpad

Other laptops I've used have a much smaller touchpad, and the touchpad is recessed a little.

But then I had to start taking it to school, to meetings, other places where I just wanted to use the stupid touchpad without it lurching all over the screen.

The reactivation area is configurable as to size and position on the touchpad, but I find the default to be effective.
