The $1,329 recommended configuration has a 2-GHz Core i7-2630 processor and 8GB of RAM, but it comes with a slighlty smaller 640GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive.

The Dell is much thinner and smaller, and the screen size is almost as big, hardly noticeable to me.
ENVY 14 by T-Bone--Tony407 (Aug, 2012)
HP has tweaked the design by adding an optical drive and a backlit keyboard, but the most intriguing change is the new display size of 14.5 inches.

screen resolution

HP ENVY 14
Dell XPS 12
ASUS N56VJ-DH71
The resolution of 1366x768 isn't a huge issue for me, but at one point, HP did offer the Envy 14 with a high-resolution (1600x900) "Radiance" display that was of excellent quality and color reproduction.

Despite some distracting reflections, we appreciated the vibrant pinks, greens, and yellows in the 1080p trailer of The Help on YouTube.

The GHZ rating (1.7) means less nowadays with multiple cores and speed boosting technology, so I won't try to compare based on that.

The clock speed (CPU) is outstanding, programs open in the blink of an eye and I run a lot of "heavy" software like photoshop, cad programs, and accounting software.

processor

HP ENVY 14
Apple MacBook Pro 8th Gen
ASUS Zenbook UX31E
For that, you get a 2.4-GHz Intel Core i3-370M dual core processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics, and a 1366 x 768 BrightView Infinity LED display.

A bit on the specs, this laptop is pretty fast, I love its large 7200 rpm HD (which copied all my music and videos in like 20 mins, which was much faster than it was when I wrote to a 5400) the i5 seems fast, with no hiccups so far.

The 4GB is a single DIMM which is nice for upgrading.

Start-up is fast, but it needs the RAM upgraded out of the box.

Edit: I would just like to add a few things, First the battery life is awesome, I use it maybe an hour or two a day and charge it only a few times a week.

If you want more endurance, you can opt for HP's $140 six-cell Slim Fit Extended Battery, which promises 8 to 10 hours of juice.

cinebench r10 32Bit

The CPU does well at balancing performance and battery life.
ENVY 14 by Tyler-S. (Jul, 2012)
This screen puts the Envy 14 smack dab in between the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook, and its Core i5 processor and ATI switchable graphics offer comparable performance to Apple's premium portables.

So, if you want a great laptop that rivals Mac but doesn't cost as much, with a backlit keyboard, nice fast processor, decent-sized hard drive with enough craftsmanship and design integrity to make even a Mac guy like me happy, then run don't walk to the HP ENVY 14-2130NR.

I purchased the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition after finding that it seemed to be the best Windows laptop available in terms of design, build quality, and CPU/GPU power to size ratio.

Screen - I knew the Brightview screen had been criticized, but the resolution is the industry standard for this size laptop.

While HP has yet to list the slice battery as a separate option, users can purchase it along with the standard 8-cell battery for $200.

For example, the battery only lasts at maximum 1 hour so one always has to have a charger and the battery becomes ever decreasing in length.
