WiDi requires a separately purchased converter box that plugs into your TV, but once that's set up, you can use WiDi to turn your big-screen TV into a second monitor, with a slight delay in transmission time.

The 13.3-inch matte screen is better than most we've seen, with strong viewing angles and crisp, bright color.

That means pretty much any current game will work well, but some of the detail settings may have to be dialed back to hit that 30fps sweet spot.

It's not quite in the ultrabook category, but this is still a reasonably thin and light 15-inch laptop, especially considering the powerful components inside, such as the quad-core CPU and Nvidia GPU.

With a quad-core Intel Core i7-3612QM CPU, the Vaio S is pretty much ready for anything, from HD video editing to heavy-duty multitasking.

This $1,199 Vaio S Series fits a nonultrabook (meaning, faster) third-gen Core i5 processor, a 640GB hard drive, 6GB of RAM, a slot-loading DVD drive, Nvidia graphics, and a higher-res 1,600x900-pixel display into the package.
VAIO S Series by c|net (Jul, 2011)
Sony has added a slot-loading drive and a larger touch pad; more RAM is included, and the hard drive is larger; there are a new, faster Intel CPU, better Nvidia graphics, and an integrated battery, which gives much improved battery life over the previous generation's $150 slice battery add-on, sold separately and practically a requirement for good battery life the last go-around.

With a third-gen 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-3210M processor, the Vaio S Series 13P handled everyday tasks very well.

Screen

And despite having a glossy finish, we enjoyed decent viewing angles from the sides and reflections were bearable.

Vaio laptops always have excellent screen quality, and in this case, images and videos were clear and bright, and off-axis viewing was impressive, even looking down from above.

This is the laptop that I wanted the new 13-inch MacBook Pro to be: lighter, graphics-boosted, with a higher-res screen.

Body

If we're going to nitpick the Vaio S's design, it's mainly the angled 1980s look the laptop seems to embrace.

The all-metal aluminum case over a magnesium alloy frame is sturdy, but it's so lightweight that it can fool you into feeling slightly flimsy.

Of those, the Vaio S is probably the most universally useful, combining sharp, high-end design with powerful components, a decent set of configuration options, and both 13- and 15-inch screens.

Our $1,299 Vaio SA configuration included a 2.3GHz Core i5-2410M CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB 5,400rpm hard drive, a 1,600x900-pixel screen, and AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics, but no Blu-ray drive; we had a standard CD/DVD burner instead.

Streaming Web videos, DVDs, and Blu-rays are supported for playback, and applications look good over the connection, too, but games requiring quick response won't work.

Some shoppers would prefer a faster full-voltage Intel processor and a built-in DVD drive.

Gpu

While this beats the measly 3,975 achieved by the IdeaPad U310 (Intel HD Graphics 4000) and the category average of 4,095, it falls far behind the 6,032 notched by the Inspiron 14z (AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics).

As good a choice as the VAIO S series is for productivity and everyday multitasking, its integrated Intel graphics are likely to disappoint gamers.

Those looking for more graphics power should consider spending extra for a configuration of the VAIO S Series 13 with Nvidia GeForce GT 640M LE graphics, starting at $969.

Battery

The slice battery does have a clever advantage: the battery charges the Vaio S' internal battery first, then depletes, allowing the slice to be removed and the Vaio S to have a full charge much like the battery pack cases on some smartphones.

I appreciate that, at long last, the Vaio S can boast good battery performance without relying on an annoying slice battery add-on.
