The 14-inch display has a native resolution of 1,600x900 pixels, which is acceptable for a higher-end laptop, and better than the 1,366x768 pixels found on most other ultrabooks and most mainstream midsize laptops.

From the get-go, the laptop operated slower than my 4-yo XPS M1330 but after a format and OS reinstallation... Works pretty fast, nice piece of hardware without the weight.

HP paints a lovely picture in bold strokes, but lacks Apple's attention to detail The Envy 14 Spectre is a perfectly fine, competent and desirable machine.

I bought this because I loved the size, the look and the screen.

At 14" I was very concerned about the small screen, but it's so sharp, so clear and so breathtaking that even out of the box with no adjustment this thing dazzles.

The screen has a maximum resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, but its brightness and viewable angles surpass many other laptops we've seen.

The screen is nice with the higher than normal ultrabook resolution (though it is a little easier to see the pixels than some other newer screens).

I normally use the 2.4 Ghz because it has better range than the 5.0 GHz, but even if I am able to get 4 bars on the Samsung with the 2.4 Ghz wireless signal (and that is while standing within 10 feet of the router only), the signal drops out so frequently that it renders the connection useless.

The good news continues with the 900X3A's specifications, with the headline being its use of a dual-core Intel Core i5-2537M.

But is this daring choice, along with fitting a 14in screen into a 13in-equivalent chassis, enough to set it apart and justify its £1,200 price – especially since this puts it up against the Samsung Series 9 900X3B and Apple Macbook AirAt first glance its specifications are nothing too out of the ordinary, with the usual selection of Intel Core i5 and i7 processors backed by 4GB of RAM, while graphics are provided by the default Intel integrated HD 3000 solution.

Again, the Series 9 allayed our fears by providing over four hours with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, while switching these off and lowering the brightness to the 40 percent equivalent we run the Productivity test at on other laptops resulted in a solid seven hours and 20 minutes.
Series 9 900X3A by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2012)
It has everything I need: it's powerful (with i7 and HD4000), has amazing sound quality, very stylish and sturdy body, great keyboard, amazing 14" screen covered with glass, great battery life, average weight and good package (case and nice set up of the software)!

Combined with excellent sharpness, we really can't think of any negatives with this screen, especially since Samsung has made the excellent decision of going for a matt screen finish to keep reflections to a minimum!

Combined with superb dark detailing and punchy colours - lent a little extra something by the glass covering the screen - this is a pretty good display for both work and play.

For all that you could love about a MacBook Air, nearly the same could be said for the sleek, black Series 9, a 13-inch laptop packed with exceptional design and undeniable geek appeal.

That said, I would not have thumbed my nose at a 1,920x1,080-pixel option, especially as the screen is clear and bright, and has excellent off-axis viewing angles.

If I had my druthers, Id love a fast Intel I7-900 series CPU but that would add $200 to cost, the CPU is much slower here even tho' theyre charging big bucks for the weight, design, 256 SSD which is about $400 or less on sale and 1333 ghz RAM which is probably at a CAS 9 speed (slower).

Connectivity is great considering the thickness of the machine and Samsung provides a stylish and neat Ethernet adapter with the stunning packaging box.

My last laptop was a Folio 13 (great ultrabook as well) but the backlit keyboard on the Folio doesn't come close to this one, and I liked that keyboard a lot.

With an overhead lamp above me, the camera performed perfectly and produced a very clear image, unlike the typical washed out images cheap webcams make.

It's highly accurate, the glass surface feels exactly like what you get from Apple, multi-touch gestures work perfectly.

Thankfully, HP has also gone for a higher-than-average 1,600 x 900 resolution, and though the panel type used is TN, it joins the Series 9 900X3A in offering one of the nicer examples of the panel tech we’ve come across on an ultraportable.
