I wouldn't say the Beats Audio processing is unpleasant — the popularity of the standalone Beats headphones is based almost exclusively on the modern listener's preference for exaggerated bass — but they just seem to make the music different, not better.

While it's still not as good as a hardware one, it's the next best thing - the 4.3" screen has enough real estate for big, well-spaced keys, which are easy to hit.
One S by GSM Arena (Apr, 2012)
The size of it is just right - 4.3 inch screen - much larger than Iphone4's, but not too wide for one hand handling.

It almost sounds like the perfect premise for a device that's all style and no substance, but that's not the case with the One S. Sure, on closer inspection that Pentile display can drive you to distraction, but I'm learning to forgive that downside for the rich upside on offer from the dual-core Snapdragon S4, ImageSense camera suite, and Ice Cream Sandwich OS.
One S by The Verge (Apr, 2012)
Great sound, great speed (BTW, most tests show that this Snapdragon S4 is just as fast on most applications as the Tegra 3 with 4 cores).

Equipped with dedicated image processor, I can vouch for this phone's impressive 8-megapixel camera.
One S by c|net (Apr, 2012)
Both signal that HTC is prioritizing image quality on the phone’s display and on smaller web formats over the full 8-megapixel size it advertises.

Performance Real world tests of HTC One S

cpu speed

As far as raw CPU performance goes, Snapdragon S4 is the king right now - don't fall for the "bigger is always better" trap and think four cores always beat two.
One S by GSM Arena (Apr, 2012)
Both our CPU benchmarks say that the new design is faster overall, even at half the cores.

Individually, you get 9 hours and 42 minutes of 3G calls, a bit over 4 hours of web browsing (phones with AMOLED screens rarely do good here) and and about 9 hours and a half of watching movies.
One S by GSM Arena (Apr, 2012)
We're still talking lights out after a couple of days (i.e. charge every other night) but at least you won't be forced to top up every evening.

Reviews Word on the street

The "Super" part of the name is what allows HTC to fit all those components behind the screen — it denotes that the touchscreen digitizer and AMOLED panel have been fused into one, which together with the lack of a backlight (unnecessary with self-illuminating OLED displays) makes the screen supremely thin.

The keyboard is excellent though, providing a good layout with keys that are large enough to easily hit even at high typing speeds.

Even if you prefer to take a video of what is dealing in front of you, you'll have no problem to extract pictures thanks to the functionnalities offered by the phone (during the recording or the playing session).

Screen

The display coating is quite reflective and the brightness isn't enough to overcome this on bright sunny days.
HTC One S | by GSM Arena (Apr, 2012)
The HTC One S screen has familiar size and resolution - it's a 4.3" qHD (540x960) unit.
HTC One S | by GSM Arena (Apr, 2012)
Our traditional display brightness and contrast test confirm our observations.

The speed of the handset means pages render incredibly fast and the Android interface allows you to see so much more of a page than for instance on an iPhone or Windows Phone device.
