Those looking to upgrade their existing Motorola Defys may be disappointed with the modest enhancements made to the Defy+, indeed it's not worth the investment, but newcomers to the waterproof smartphone market should be excited.

Pleasingly light on third-party bloatware, but it’s still a heavy skinCamera.

While I'd prefer a slightly larger display, for its size the Defy+ doesn't do a bad job.

But, it's small, rugged, waterproof, screen-scratch resistant, easy to pull out the battery.

Despite the gloom, the Defy has done a reasonable job of capturing this scene, though peer closer and the lack of detail is obvious.

Now, a year on, the Defy is back with a faster processor and… well, that's it actually.
DEFY+ by TrustedReviews (Dec, 2011)
A year later, and Motorola has released the Defy+ — a phone that on the outside looks remarkably similar to the original, down to the capacitive buttons, locking back, and camera, with an upgrade to Android 2.3 and a slight processor bump as the only notable spec increases.

Although modest in terms of specs, the 5 megapixel camera actually takes quite a nice shot, getting exposure and colouration right, even if every detail isn't captured.
DEFY+ by TrustedReviews (Dec, 2011)
Video is sadly limited to VGA (640 x 480) despite the camera’s 5-megapixel sensor, though if you can look past the low resolution its performance isn’t terrible.

Compared with some of the Android powerhouses we’ve reviewed in the past couple of months, in terms of specs the Defy+ is relatively feeble — a single-core 1GHz processor combined with 512MB of RAM.

What would be a really neat addition to a subsequent model would be a similar touch charging mechanism to that seen on the HTC Rhyme, thus saving you having to remove the sealing flap from the microUSB port every time you want to charge it.

When I went to recharge the device, though, I found that not all was as well as it seemed, with the battery refusing to take a charge.

The images produced by the 5-megapixel sensor are average for a phone — color reproduction is reasonably accurate if occasionally a little blue, and when you’re shooting a still object you’re likely to be pleased with the results.

When it comes to playing other videos, it's clear why that camera is limited to non HD resolutions.

Learning the Android system took me a while, but it's worth it.

The construction feels really good and the phone is really waterproof, It fell in the water the first day I used it..... Installing all the apps goes easy, but I guess it works the same on all Androids.

It came speaking only French, but when I installed the the T-mobile sim card, it spoke English.

Screen

What's more, as well as being finished in tough Gorilla Glass, the actual display is noticeably recessed from the surface of the glass.
Motorola DEFY+ Plus | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Dec, 2011)
Although some larger screens might be reaching the 720p mark, with a panel this small, the relatively low resolution just isn't an issue.
Motorola DEFY+ Plus | Rated 60% by by The Verge (Feb, 2012)
As ever we quickly rid the screen of most of these to get the most performance out of the handset, just keeping the Google search bar and settings toggles.

Type

So far we've established that the Motorola Defy+ is a competent little mid-range smartphone that packs in all the basics you'd expect of an Android device.
Motorola DEFY+ Plus | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Dec, 2011)
Overall, though, we're talking about a typically capable Android 2.3 handset.

Operating system

It's not too defiant, but resists more than most handsets I was pleasantly surprised by a number of things about the Defy+ — I found a lot of Motorola’s customizations to the software useful though a little weighty, and appreciated its heroic ability to find a network connection when all other phones around me are struggling.
Motorola DEFY+ Plus | Rated 60% by by The Verge (Feb, 2012)
It's not consistent — sometimes it works perfectly, so it's difficult to work out whether this is a design flaw, a problem with my review unit, or something that can be solved in a software update.
Motorola DEFY+ Plus | Rated 60% by by The Verge (Feb, 2012)
The software accounts for one of the biggest differences over the first-generation Defy, with the handset now running Android 2.3.4 over the original’s 2.2.

Instead it's one that simply provides enough performance to ensure you can make a call, write a text, check your emails and browse the web without frustration.

Playing a few of our choice games that sluggish performance also came through with even Angry Birds looking a bit choppy.

Until we'd got to the MarketPlace and downloaded the aforementioned apps, we couldn't really use any of these features.
