The web browser is another feature that fundamentally gets the job done quite well, showing web pages accurately and providing the usual touch-interface niceties of pinch-to-zoom and inertial scrolling.

And there is much to catch up on – the competition, the iOS, the Android OS, even Bada OS – they are still ahead when it comes to handling.

The aggressive noise reduction smudges fine detail, there are plenty of oversharpening artifacts to see as well as softness in the extreme corners.

As such, we think that anyone used to slicker OSes like iOS, Android and WebOS won't be tempted by this device.

Similarly the 8 mega pixel camera is excellent, including the special "fixed" lens which gives high quality and sharpness from 50cm to infinity; very impressive and faster and more accurate than an auto-focus phone camera (which have 4 positions typically, not infinitely variable like a full size auto-focus camera).

You'll get everything the C7 has, plus...Xenon flash (which takes excellent shots in pitch black).

Screen

One of the first things you notice about the interface is the rather neat clock display that sits there whenever the phone is out of your pocket but not in use.

Update 05 Nov: To redeem the Nokia C7 here are a couple of shots taken with the sharpness set to a lower, more acceptable level.

Camera

You’ve heard that before and you’ll hear it once again: when it comes to digital cameras, it’s NOT the megapixels that count but the image quality.
Nokia C7 | by GSM Arena (Nov, 2010)
On top of that, the camera interface is far from user-friendly.

Two more Nokia C7 camera samples • a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 camera sample.

Apps

On the software definitely Belle works very well, has great new features, such as widgets, up to 6 home screens, excellent notification bar (you can control with a single click - enable / disable - Cel Data, WiFi, Bluetooth and Silent, has calendar notifications, messages, etc.).
Nokia C7 | Rated 80% by by Hiram-Alfonso-Fernandez-Hernandez--Hiram-Fdz (Oct, 2012)
Once through the very cumbersome email setup, you also have a reasonably competent email client that supports all the usual POP3 (hotmail), IMAP (gmail) and Exchange options.
Nokia C7 | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Jul, 2012)
Additionally you can load Swype from Nokia's App store to make this an awesome texting machine!

Operating system

Symbian 3 OS is definitely a much better OS than the old one.
Nokia C7 | Rated 80% by by Kenzo (Nov, 2010)
Regarding the latter, it can be customised - as indeed you can with most of the OS - but you don't really expect to have to do quite so much just to make a phone usable.
Nokia C7 | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Jul, 2012)
The Nokia C7 comes with virtually the same image browsing software as its predecessors and, honestly, it’s barely passable by modern standards.
Nokia C7 | by GSM Arena (Nov, 2010)

Video

Video player is impressive, could use some subtitles.
Nokia C7 | by GSM Arena (Nov, 2010)
You can also put the mobile display to good use with some DivX/XviD videos as those are seamlessly supported.
Nokia C7 | by GSM Arena (Nov, 2010)
& videos look clear and crisp- Capacitive touch screen is great, very responsive.

What is a good budget phone with WiFi calling (skype or equivalent) and external storage (micro SD)?

I do a lot of travel. I have ipad for internet and games. I need a lite phone with a little brains, and a decent camera to capture impromptu scenes.
