But there are plenty of positives too – the nice still camera, the excellent UI, the build quality and materials and the connectivity too (Wi-Fi tethering is still a premium feature).

2G and 3G with HSDPA are common ground – but Wi-Fi tethering (USB tethering too) is a pretty rare built-in feature and yet it’s salient to anyone with a data plan and a laptop.

Given the not so big screen, the QWERTY keyboard is not the most comfortable.

Next to the 320 x 480 pixel display of the HTC Legend, which also uses a 3.2in unit, the Wave 723’s screen looks unrefined and dated in an age where the iPhone 4 packs in more than six times the number of pixels in an only slightly larger display.

Since the Samsung S7230E Wave 723 screen has a fairly low resolution (WQVGA), it has a harder time fitting several widgets per pane (compared to the WVGA screen of the S8500 Wave).

Metal-bodied, Super AMOLED-screened and powered by the same Hummingbird processor as the Samsung Galaxy S, it wasn’t the ultra-accessible budget device some expected to launch alongside Samsung’s own smartphone OS.

Reviews Word on the street

All controls are large enough and solid to press with excellent tactility.

Many of these are low-quality java ports rather than the iPhone ports we’re used to in other smartphones ─ the navigation of it even smacks of an old Java games portal rather than a smartphone store like the Android Market or BlackBerry App World.

Screen

Viewing angles are excellent, with no contrast shift, but the pixel count leaves text and icons looking blocky.

The Call, End and Menu keys are well defined and solid to press • The earpiece above the display.

Cuts have been made – the one we miss the most is the brilliant SuperAMOLED, which has been replaced with a low-res LCD.
Samsung Wave 723 | by GSM Arena (Nov, 2010)

Type

The Bada interface draws on both TouchWiz and Android (especially Samsung’s TouchWiz for Android interface) for its inspiration and the end result is commendable.
Samsung Wave 723 | by GSM Arena (Nov, 2010)
Other companies have cheap Androids too - and really, if Bada is to become the smartphone OS for the masses, it has to beat Android to it.
Samsung Wave 723 | by GSM Arena (Nov, 2010)
Bada has its own app store, comes with a GPS navigation app and gives multiple home screens to customise with widgets.
Samsung Wave 723 | Rated 50% by by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2011)

Operating system

Samsung’s best-known smartphones are Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S, but in the background it has quietly been working away on its own Bada-powered phones.
Samsung Wave 723 | Rated 50% by by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2011)
If you think you’ll find the boundless scope for customisation of Android daunting or of no interest, Bada’s not a bad alternative.
Samsung Wave 723 | Rated 50% by by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2011)
The navigation of Bada comes across like an impersonation of Android in particular, but crucially it’s not a bad one.
Samsung Wave 723 | Rated 50% by by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2011)

Video

The other WMV videos we tried gave an “Unsupported video codec” error.
Samsung Wave 723 | by GSM Arena (Nov, 2010)
And the smooth 720p video recording is gone too – another feature we loved on the S8500.
Samsung Wave 723 | by GSM Arena (Nov, 2010)
In anything less than perfect lighting, images are grainy and there’s plenty of purple fringing on-show.
Samsung Wave 723 | Rated 50% by by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2011)

Camera

Although the camera’s pleasant to use, the resulting photos are unspectacular.
Samsung Wave 723 | Rated 50% by by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2011)
Generally, the camera launches instantly, which was pretty impressive.
Samsung Wave 723 | by GSM Arena (Nov, 2010)
The camcorder interface is similar to the UI on the still camera and identical to the camera UIs on other Samsungs (again, regardless of their OS).
