Though I love the LG Optimus 4X HD's simple, sleek design and lightweight build (considering its size - it weighs only 5.12 ounces), it's a tall device.

screen resolution

Sony Xperia S
LG Optimus 4X HD
It is fairly accurate in colors (not overly saturated), has good viewing angles, and looks very sharp (highest PPI in phones).
Xperia S by rawr (Oct, 2012)
It's bright enough to be readable in sunlight, and its 312 PPI pixel density is well into "retina" territory — you definitely won't notice individual pixels, a fact also helped by the RGB layout rather than the dreaded PenTile look.

This handset seems to tick all the boxes for those after a high-end Android handset as it packs in not just a quad-core processor and large HD screen, but also has a fast 8-megapixel camera, NFC support and comes loaded with Google Android 4.0 OS, Ice Cream SandwichOf course, pricing is key and its good to see that the LG Optimus 4X HD comes in a little bit lower than the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Apple iPhone 4S.

The most immediate impact of having such a pixel-dense (342ppi) display as on the Xperia S is that you’ll see some extremely sharp images, thanks to the individual pixels on the display melting into one cohesive canvas.

It's not the best phone display I've seen (that's the One X, and it's not close), but the 4X's screen is as good as you'll find outside HTC's flagship.

Martin/CNET). The Xperia’s speakers delivered loud sound, but its Clear Audio + sound enhancement feature didn’t seem to make a difference in sound quality.

Multimedia is well catered for with easy to use apps for music, FM radio and photo viewing, while a quick download of a third party video player will have the phone playing back just about any video you care to try – and they'll both look and sound great.

This phone has a great screen True HD-IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors, size 720 x 1280 pixels, 4.7 inches (~ 312 ppi pixel density equal to or better than an iPhone).

cores

If you can get over the lack of two extra cores and ICS at launch (the update is coming), there's plenty to like about the Sony Xperia S..
Sony Xperia S | by GSM Arena (Mar, 2012)
With quad-cores just around the corner, you'd be forgiven for having doubts about the Xperia S, but Sony have actually done quite well at squeezing the best possible performance out of it.
Sony Xperia S | by GSM Arena (Mar, 2012)
The Xperia S hasn't got a quad-core processor (not even a next-gen dual-core) and it only comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box for now.
Sony Xperia S | by GSM Arena (Mar, 2012)

cpu

After a careful review of smartphones in the middle price range (i.e. $400 - $500), I narrowed down the search to the LG OPTIMUS 4X HD P880 and the SONY XPERIA ACRO S. While the LG comes with a Quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, versus the dual-core of the Sony, I was compelled by the hard-button camera key and the picture quality.
Sony Xperia S | Rated 100% by by Pete--pete041 (Oct, 2012)
The LG Optimus 4X HD couldn't repeat the feat of its dual-core predecessor, which had the spotlight all to itself for a good few months last year.
LG Optimus 4X HD | by GSM Arena (Jun, 2012)
for Xperia S CPU, GPU, and RAM are far enough for today's most apps.

camera

With a 12MP camera, image quality is obviously a priority with the Xperia S and Sony have created a very capable shooter.
Sony Xperia S | by GSM Arena (Mar, 2012)
Some even offer good image quality, but if you want 12MP resolution, then the Xperia S and the Xperia ion are your only choice.
Sony Xperia S | by GSM Arena (Mar, 2012)
But here's what the Xperia S has going for it: the screen is nothing short of amazing, the camera is one of very few to offer 12MP resolution and the connectivity has plenty of useful features.
Sony Xperia S | by GSM Arena (Mar, 2012)

usability

Just like on the Xperia S, the capacitive keys are big enough, but they've been tweaked to require a proper press rather than a light touch, which benefits usability once you get used hitting them with a little more force.
Sony Xperia S | by GSM Arena (Sep, 2012)
Upcoming devices like the One X, LG Optimus 4X, and Samsung Galaxy S III threaten to obviate the Xperia S' existence before it's truly gotten started, while the currently available Galaxy Nexus shows it up in the usability stakes.
