Sure it's not the slim sweetness of the Xpera ray, but the Xperia U is still nicely compact and the transparent strip, which changes its color to match the screen contents, is a cool accent.

The size is great, it's not too big, not too small and the screen is perfect enough.

screen size

We mentioned that the screen of the Sony Xperia U isn’t all that big but while it certainly doesn’t rival the big guns for watching video or playing games it’s actually perfectly adequate for everything else.
Xperia U by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)
Touch focusing is responsive, but the shutter button is a little small, and with a large thumb the phone will often think you're trying to focus on the edge of the screen rather than attempting to snag a snap.
Galaxy Ace 2 by TrustedReviews (Aug, 2012)

screen resolution

Sony Xperia U
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2
The clarity of the screen is very nice with 480 x 854 pixels, 3.5 inches (~280 ppi pixel density).

Still colors are nicely balanced and the detail is enough for the Ace 2 to be considered a good shooter in times of need.

The Xperia P and Xperia U both run dual-core CPUs and sport the snazzy design found on the Xperia S. The devices are expected to ship this week in Spain; they'll also feature NFC chips and strong multimedia capabilities.
Xperia U by c|net (Feb, 2012)
I'm quite pleased with this cell phone because it has many improvements over version S5830 (ACE), in terms of speed (since it is dual core), ergonomics, screen and graphics, also has more storage memory for applications (rather negative aspect in the ACE version).

It’s a VGA (0.3 megapixel) unit, but handled a few low-light Skype conversations reasonably well.

Very good phone, excellent screen resolution, no lag whatsoever, and the camera does the job.

Performance Real world tests of Sony Xperia U vs Samsung Galaxy Ace 2

cpu speed

Despite being very nice with a bright screen and great processor speed on wifi, it didn't work on the T-Mobile frequencies.
Xperia U by Valentin-Filipov
It is really fast (dual core) and the available memory is good.

talk time

336 min
450 min
I want to add something about the battery, this phone has a battery Standard battery, Li-Ion of 1320 mAh (not a big issue), don't know why they didn't put something better, but is ok, if you install some apps like: Defender Juice and specially Easy Battery Saver, any android phone will last longer, like twice the time.
Xperia U by Cec (Aug, 2012)
If you stick to 2G you get up to 16 h 20 min of talk time or 670 h of stand-by.

SunSpider, BrowserMark and Linpack scores of 2499, 66437 and 33.7 (single) and 64.7 (multi) show this phone is fast when it comes to raw CPU power while scores of 2178 and 1529 in the Egypt and Pro offscreen tests of GLBenchmark prove it has gaming chops too.

PLS is Samsung's take on IPS, the screen technology used in the iPhone 4S and HTC One X. Viewing angles are excellent, with just some loss of brightness when tilted to extremes in particular directions.

it has a good weight and good thickness and feel.

The phone is great however it seems to be shipped with carrier bloatware from the carrier TIM.

I chose Sony because my family and I have a lot of Sony products for generations and we trust the Sony brand for their excellent product quality and design so thats why I got the Sony Xperia U phone.

She loves it, because it is fast, nice and it is not heavy at all.

storage

With a bigger 3.8" screen and a microSD card slot, it can match the Xperia U in terms of speed and performance and even get a slight edge in overall experience thanks to the more functional TouchWiz launcher.
Sony Xperia U | by GSM Arena (Jun, 2012)
The obvious catch here is the Sony Xperia U limited storage, but if that's a deal-breaker to you we should've lost you at the intro.
Sony Xperia U | by GSM Arena (Jun, 2012)
Overall, if the limited storage is of no consequence we'd go for the Xperia U (which should also get ICS next month).
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 | by GSM Arena (Jul, 2012)

screen

Once connected, a standard mouse pointer appears enabling mouse operation, but it isn't very useful on the small screen of the Xperia U. It's still good to have though.
Sony Xperia U | by GSM Arena (Jun, 2012)
Detail is reasonable but the Sony Xperia U over emphasises the dullness of this day.
Sony Xperia U | Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)
The only issue I take with the visual experience the Xperia U offers is that the display is too small.
Sony Xperia U | Rated 74% by by The Verge (Jul, 2012)

design

Unsurprisingly, where the Xperia U feels most budget is in its design and build, but not in the way you’d expect.
Sony Xperia U | Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)
The Sony Xperia U specs sheet reads like a high-end device for the most part and the design of the smartphone easily manages to keep pace.
Sony Xperia U | by GSM Arena (Jun, 2012)
At first glance the Sony Xperia U is the logical choice, for its slightly faster CPU and cooler curved design.
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 | by GSM Arena (Jul, 2012)

cpu

The Xperia U matched its more expensive competition here, only laggin behind the One S and its newer Krait cores.
Sony Xperia U | by GSM Arena (Jun, 2012)
The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 is powered by a NovaThor U8500 chipset with a dual-core processor, though clocked lower than the 1GHz minimum we're used to seeing.
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 | by GSM Arena (Jul, 2012)
The Xperia U, as previously mentioned, shares the same 1GHz dual-core ST-Ericsson NovaThor U8500 processor and Mali-400 GPU as the Xperia P. While the SoC powers the P just fine, I found that the Xperia U's less-demanding FWVGA display actually makes it a more powerful device in everyday use.
Sony Xperia U | Rated 74% by by The Verge (Jul, 2012)

touch

It addresses the limited storage and the smaller screen issues, but doesn't look quite as good as the Xperia U and its highly promoted floating touch feature turned out to be pretty useless in real life.
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 | by GSM Arena (Jul, 2012)
Thanks to the proximity sensor, the Sony Xperia U automatically disables the touchscreen when you hold it up to your ear during a call.

Both of these phones will run games easily without lag and are have fairly similar processing power. What makes the ace better is that it runs on the latest version of Android. View jckr's recommendation
