The gorgeous display of the iPad 3 (the Retina Display is the key selling point for me), is unparalleled, and is phenomenal for watching movies, but if I had to give up either the original Kindle or the iPad 3, it wouldn't be the Kindle.

I've been using this tablet for over 10 hours so far and I must say even though the technical part of this tablet is great, sofware wise is so dissapointing.

I paid extra for the "fast" charger, but it still took probably 3 hours to charge.

The IPS, LCD screen looks better than probably any other tablet display I've seen, save for the new iPad.

That ereader has a front-lit screen while this tablet has a backlit screen, which is much less relaxing on the eyes.

Images and text are sharper thanks to the higher resolution and higher contrast of the screen.

KF HD has a helpful, relevant accessibility setting that adds voice to the control buttons so the tablet is much easier to use for the vision impaired, especially since there is no text-size choice for control buttons.

What I do like is the size is awsome and makes playing games like angry birds or fruit ninja even better.

Moving then to the user experience interface...remember I am coming from unadorned Android Ice Cream Sandwich and some experience of iOS 5...well, the Fire it gets the job done.

Screen

This is a mid-grade screen, with whites looking a little off - a little yellowish - but performance for the price is excellent.

After I downloaded my first game app I started playing it and was happy with sound that the speakers put out as well as how great it looked with the HD screen.

The screen is crystal clear and the graphics are amazing (except for Netflix movies I'm not sure why).

Battery

It's lightweight, has great battery life for a tablet, and to top it off, it charges faster than any "smart device" I've ever owned (and trust me, I've owned a lot).

Watching movies works okay, but rentals only last 24 hours, so if you try to download movies on the device before vacation, they only work for 24 hours.
Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7" | Rated 20% by by Micah
In fact, that old charger will charge as fast as the new "fast" charger for the HD Kindle Fire (sold separately).

Although Amazon Android applications are usually compatible with other Android devices, Google android applications are not compatible with the Kindle Fire.

For anyone who isn't married to straight Android, or who has skin in the game in Amazon's ecosystem, this one is a no-brainer.
Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7" | Rated 100% by by Fisterkev (Oct, 2012)
In various ways Amazon's alterations to the Android UI accomplished that - for instance, the Galaxy Tab permanently reserves a portion of the screen for the bar with the back and home buttons, but on the Fire this bar would fold away or disappear.

Beyond that, I always found both Android and iOS to be pretty intuitive as well.

I have a mix of technology in my house, and have owned 5 android based devices and 5 IOS based devices, and I can easily say that the android based devices crash and have issues about 100x more often than IOS devices.

The software on the Kindle Fire HD may well be the product's Achilles Heel, while the services the software provides are clearly its winning edge.
