Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

The camera app is fast whether you're shooting 1080p video or the 8-megapixel stills, and there's surprisingly little shutter lag.

A big, 1080p display on an Android device is great for watching movies, but it's worse for a lot of other things.
Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 by The Verge (Oct, 2012)
The screen is well-laminated to the glass, so it feels really close to your finger — that makes everything more immersive, and makes it feel more responsive as well.

screen resolution

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700
Google Nexus 10
Apple iPad mini
Compared with the new iPad, which runs at a 2,048x1,536-pixel resolution, it's really difficult to see a difference in text quality and sharpness between the two.
Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 by c|net (Jun, 2012)
The screen also has a really nice brightness range: it gets dim enough that it won't burn your retinas in a dark room, but also bright enough to be usable outdoors (the + in IPS+ is all about brightness).

The Pad TF700 version is clocked at 1.6GHz with two to four cores active and up to 1.7GHz in single-core operations, compared with 1.3GHz and 1.4GHz on the Prime, respectively.

That's a very good thing — I'd argue the display is the most important feature on any tablet, certainly moreso than the number of cores in your processor.

cpu speed

In balanced mode and power-saving mode, the CPU speed is throttled to save on battery life.
Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 by c|net (Jun, 2012)
And the frequency of apps that take full advantage of the quad-core CPU needs to pick up if it's going to be anything other than a stopgap.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700

The TF700's Web speeds in the default browser were a second or two slower than the iPad's when traveling to the same sites, but matched the Prime on average.
Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 by c|net (Jun, 2012)
I tried the Chrome Beta browser as well, but didn't experience any noticeably faster performance and saw a few too many clipping bugs to feel comfortable enough to continue using it as a test.

The dock's battery drains first when they're connected, and it actually charges the tablet — you just drop the tablet in when it's dead, and since I left the dock plugged in most of the time I've never once had to charge the tablet itself.
Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 by The Verge (Oct, 2012)
You get a full, six-row QWERTY keyboard, a trackpad, and a big extra battery, turning the tablet into a productivity workhorse.

The iPad's screen is at least as good, and its app selection absolutely laps Android.

Still, Web speeds are fast, and GPS actually works and works well.

Type

I'm really excited about this type of device for Windows 8, which lends itself better to a combination of touch and keyboard / mouse input, but the Android-based Transformers definitely won't replace your laptop.

The best Android tablet camera just got better (pictures) 1-2 of 10.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 32GB | Rated 83% by by c|net (Jun, 2012)
While the iPad is still the best overall tablet on the market, the TF700 succeeds despite the current Android market's lack of support and is the choice for those looking to take the premium Android tablet plunge.

Operating system

Google's latest OS brings a litany of performance and feature enhancements, but upgrading the Infinity wasn't quite the revolutionary action I anticipated.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 32GB | Rated 76% by by The Verge (Oct, 2012)
While Android 4.0 is the best version of the OS yet, unfortunately for the TF700, it still lags behind iOS in app support.

Asus doesn't add much to the software, opting for small tweaks rather than huge overhauls.

Screen

The Super IPS+ (In-Plane Switching) mode boosts the TF700's screen brightness - making reading in sunlight a bit easier.

On the home screen, text under app icons didn't look that different, until you bring your eyes closer than you would normally.

It's not until you're looking at the screens side by side that you start to appreciate the additional pixels.

Camera

Image stabilization in video was high, compensating nicely for many unwanted camera movements.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 32GB | Rated 83% by by c|net (Jun, 2012)
A quick note on the camera, despite the fact that I'm still firmly of the belief that no one in their right mind should take pictures with their tablet.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 32GB | Rated 76% by by The Verge (Oct, 2012)
If you disagree (or are not in your right mind) you'll be happy with the Infinity's 8-megapixel rear shooter.

Apps

Everything's better, for sure, and thanks to the 1.6GHz Tegra 3 processor this is as capable a gaming tablet as I've used.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 32GB | Rated 76% by by The Verge (Oct, 2012)
Asus also adds a handful of apps to the device, most of which I never opened except to see what they were: there's the @vibe Fun Center (that's actually what it's called), Asus's MyCloud and MyNet apps, the cool SuperNote app that lets you create neat-looking scrapbooks, and a few others.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700 32GB | Rated 76% by by The Verge (Oct, 2012)
Thankfully, apps like the Marvel comics app take full advantage of Tegra 3's extra horsepower by offering smoother transitions between panels in digital comics.
