Android 3.2 Honeycomb

Toshiba hasn't given a timeframe on the Thrive 7-inch's Ice Cream Sandwich update, but it’s coming, and I really feel like it will make a very, very big difference in terms of usability.

I anticipate that large tweaks like that and other small tucks will make these tablets much better once ICS arrives for the larger screen.

While the $379 tablet has the same internal specs — a Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage — it costs less than the original Thrive without sacrificing its high resolution 1280 x 800 7-inch display.
Thrive 7" Tablet by The Verge (Dec, 2011)
The nice, pixel-dense 1280 x 800-resolution display can only do so much for this $349 tablet; it just isn’t enough to combat the creaking and poor build quality, the camera placement, and the lagging performance and battery life.

Undoubtedly you know what I am going to say about the 2-megapixel front facing camera; it is good for video chatting and that's about it.
Thrive 7" Tablet by The Verge (Dec, 2011)
Just like on the original Thrive, the 5-megapixel camera is awkwardly placed in the middle of one end, and since it’s more natural to hold the tablet horizontally to take a shot, I consistently blocked it with my finger.

Its Tegra 2 1GHz Dual-core processor is also starting to seem a little old-hat, now that quad-core tabs are appearing.

We did notice a little lag in the tab too, more so than in its brother the 1.2GHz dual-core Excite X10.

When you're surfing the Web, to make sure the CPU isn't wasting time drawing assets no one can see, it will only draw the assets on the screen and anything not currently on the screen will be drawn when you scroll to it.

The weight disparity is negligible.

Screen

The Toshiba Thrive is technically proficient, with a good screen, decent connectivity and a design that, while not slick, feels comfy in-hand.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | by TrustedReviews (Mar, 2012)
What we liked about the Thrive 7, over previous 7in Android tabs we've reviewed, is that it has a good-quality screen.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | by TrustedReviews (Mar, 2012)
On the Verge Battery Test, which loops a series of 100 websites and intermittently downloads photos with brightness set at 65 percent, the tablet's 15Wh battery lasted only 3 hours and 51 minutes.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | Rated 51% by by The Verge (Dec, 2011)

Camera

On top of that, the camera is very slow to take shots.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | Rated 51% by by The Verge (Dec, 2011)
I can't start this camera section without first talking about the terrible placement of the lens.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | Rated 51% by by The Verge (Dec, 2011)
Shutter lag on the Thrive 7-inch's camera was painfully slow, sometimes lasting up to 6 seconds, so whatever moment you were all set to capture could be long gone by the time it snapped.

Ports

This opens-up potential for dock accessories - the official Thrive dock adds a full-size HDMI output, two full-size USB sockets and a 3.5mm audio output.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | by TrustedReviews (Mar, 2012)
Unfortunately, that size decrease also means that the original's full-size ports also had to be shrunk to compensate.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | Rated 51% by by The Verge (Dec, 2011)
I have no clue why Toshiba opted for the Mini USB over the more common Micro port; digging up a Mini USB cord was a chore when I wanted to transfer over some pictures.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | Rated 51% by by The Verge (Dec, 2011)

Apps

It added a file manager and a handful of third-party apps, like Kaspersky Tablet Security and Need for Speed Shift.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | Rated 51% by by The Verge (Dec, 2011)
We tested this by playing sound from other tablets right next to it, but didn't notice a change in the volume of the music the Thrive 7-inch was playing.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | Rated 65% by by c|net (Dec, 2011)
ICS really has added significant polish to the platform, and, above all, I just want to be able to swipe away open apps in the app shortcut bar.
Toshiba Thrive 7" Tablet 32 GB | Rated 51% by by The Verge (Dec, 2011)

Data

The battery does charge up rather quickly, but it has to be done through Toshiba’s chunky proprietary port on the bottom of the system; the Mini USB port won’t charge up the cell.

On the top-left edge is a well-hidden port door that, when opened, reveals a Mini-HDMI port, Mini-USB port, and microSD slot.
