The PZ950's most remarkable design element is its one-sheet face, where a single panel of glass fronts both the screen and bezel for sleek, a seamless look.

Where 3D is concerned, we found ourselves less than impressed with the single set of active shutter glasses that ship with the 50PZ950.

We performed a hands-on evaluation of the 50-inch LG 50PZ950, but this review also applies to the other screen size in the series.

This must inevitably make life a bit tough for LG’s marketing people, as it’s hard to say on the one hand that the passive 3D format is the best one for the consumer when almost half of its own TV range uses the other format!

Exploring this Smart TV system in depth, we were startled to find some quite significant changes since we last checked it out only a few weeks ago.
Infinia PZ950 by TrustedReviews (Oct, 2011)
This makes the TV look wafer thin unless you make a point of sticking your head around its side and see that its rear actually protrudes around 50mm.

LG also needs to get to grips with its input lag issues if it’s going to start satisfying TrustedReviews’ gaming obsessions.

black levels

LG Infinia PZ950
Samsung 8000 Series (2011 Plasma)
Colors did seem a bit more washed-out at times on the PZ950, however, as a result of its lighter black levels.
Infinia PZ950 by c|net (Aug, 2011)
Unfortunately, though, this filter doesn’t produce quite the degree of black level depth we’d hoped it would.

The LGs didn't reduce the brightness of reflections nor preserve black levels as well as any of the others in our lineup.

The two TVs have identical specs and according to the manufacturer should provide very similar picture quality.

Reviews Word on the street

The 50PZ950 makes a strong first impression, by combining an attractively minimal, single-layer fascia with an exceptionally heavy duty build quality.

Unlike LG's 2011 LCDs, its plasma TVs use active-shutter 3D glasses, zero pairs of which come with the TV.

Panel

Finally, as usual with plasma TVs, you can watch the 50PZ950’s pictures from almost as wide an angle as you like without images losing contrast or colour saturation - a handy trick you don’t get with LCD TVs.

Depth levels are natural but dynamic too, and 3D motion is handled well, with good levels of clarity and minimal judder.
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Oct, 2011)
The new glasses sync using a 2.4GHz wireless signal so they aren't subject to line-of-sight like the Infrared models Panasonic uses, and we appreciate that they do have rechargeable batteries.

3d

3D: The PZ950 wasn't a bad 3D performer but fell short of the picture quality of all of the active models save the Sony LED and the PX950.
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 76% by by c|net (Aug, 2011)
We also spotted new AutoCar, Stuff and ITN video feeds, a new ‘3D Zone’ channel for streaming 3D documentaries and entertainment programming, as well as subscription-only services from Box Office 365 and The Cartoon Network.
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Oct, 2011)
That said, the number of apps has increased from 14 to 32 since we reviewed the LG 47LW5600 in late June, and new additions include Fandango (no ticket sales, just lame trailers for now) and "3D Zone" (even lamer 3D video clips).
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 76% by by c|net (Aug, 2011)

Picture quality

Standard definition pictures don’t enjoy the highest levels of sharpness we’ve seen, but the level of softness is by no means unwatchably bad, and also helps the TV ‘hide’ the sort of MPEG compression and grain noise that can affect standard definition images on big-screen TVs.
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Oct, 2011)
The greyness also obscures some of the subtle details that help give dark scenes a sense of depth.
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Oct, 2011)
Shadow detail was very good on the PZ950, with no loss of detail near black-something that can't be said of the D7000 or LW5600-as well as no excessive lightening, as we saw near-black on the VT30.

Content

For our image quality tests we enlisted "Unknown" on Blu-ray using the TVs below.
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 76% by by c|net (Aug, 2011)
Among Blu-ray players we dubbed LG's Smart TV our favorite suite of streaming services and apps, with Panasonic's Viera Cast a close second.
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 76% by by c|net (Aug, 2011)
Maybe the brand should take a break from acquiring new content and focus for a bit on getting what’s there to work properly.
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Oct, 2011)

Type

Performance With its light black levels, the PZ950 series is the only plasma TV we've tested this year that didn't score an 8 or higher in this category.
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 76% by by c|net (Aug, 2011)
That said, it's still a very good performer, with excellent color, the ability to handle 1080p/24, and all of the usual uniformity advantages over LCD.
LG Infinia PZ950 60" | Rated 76% by by c|net (Aug, 2011)
The TV's robust Internet suite and sleek styling help increase its appeal, but won't help its standing in the eyes of dark-room home theater fans shopping for plasmas in this price range.
