The ST50 handily outperforms its predecessor, with deeper blacks, more accurate color, and an improved bright-room image.

Black levels on the UT50 series are about the same as what we saw on the superb flagship TC-P55VT30 a year ago, which is almost unbelievable in such a cheap TV, and while the sparse color controls give little wiggle room, color accuracy isn't an issue.

Of course I can't say how the ST50 will age, but if the 2011 Panasonics are any indication, it won't get much worse during the first year.

In practical terms that means other companies' glasses that also support the standard should work with this Panasonic; Samsung's $20 SSG-4100GB glasses do, for example.

picture quality

According to CNET, the UT50 series almost matched the picture quality of the ST50, but with dulled down features.
